Philadelphia Inquirer Sudoku National Championship
From the FAQ at http://www.philly.com/philly/comics_games/sudoku/8058927.html :

Who is creating the puzzles?

The puzzles will be selected by Nick Baxter, who is captain of the U.S. team for the World Sudoku Championship. We can't reveal how the puzzles are being created for the tournament.

I'm going to answer that question here to say that I created the puzzles for the tournament, but with a good bit of testing, comments, and back-and-forth with Nick Baxter. I feel pretty excited; I feel like I've come up with a pretty good set of puzzles, many of which are themed with the tournament.

Now, whether anyone will appreciate them is another matter...

I have a friend who writes programs to do automatic generation of crossword puzzles. Some of them are awesome, like having English words reading across and Romanian words reading down (go ahead and guess what nationality he is). There are many other cool tricks that are fairly easy to program that human composers would have a hard time with.

What constitutes a good Sudoku puzzle, and what would it take to design an AI to generate nice ones rather than commons? Is it about the applicability of human heuristics (which solving programs obviously don't need)?

wasn't that going to be in different "ability layers"? so why couldn't other people help, just with puzzles that are below their level of competition? just asking :)

otherwise, i would love to see a few of those, after the fact of course.

In fact, I always get excited after the fact when that happens, because I don't even think about it ahead of time.

Okay, I'm going to totally reveal my ignorance here, but I've decided that my ego will survive it.

How do you theme a sudoku?

For example, in one puzzle, the numbers were arranged in the shape of the liberty bell. In another, July 4th 1776 was a repeating pattern in the clues: 74 17 76. My wife and I live in Philly. I went there to support her and then I decided to sign up. The puzzles were very well constructed.

Interesting blog. I think it is important to practise and sometime get some experiences guidance to become an expert at the game. It can be a bit tricky and frustating at first but slowly everybody learns the ropes.
